ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has demanded the immediate resignation of Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal over his handling of the sit-in at the capital’s Faizabad interchange.
In a statement, PTI Secretary General Jehangir Tareen said it was due to the failure of the interior minister that the army had to be summoned to Islamabad.
The PTI leader alleged that Ahsan Iqbal instead of resolving the issue kept on making hollow claims in his capacity as the interior minister.
Tareen called the government’s decision to shut down news channels and social media undemocratic, urging to revert it.
The Ministry of Interior issued Saturday night a statutory regulatory order (SRO) to authorize the deployment of the Pakistan Army to aid civil power to control the law and order situation in the Islamabad Capital Territory.
In response, however, the Pakistan Army said while its troops are "fully ready to perform the assigned task in line with its institutional obligations", there are "few aspects meriting deliberation prior to the deployment".
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa are expected to hold an important meeting on Sunday to discuss the situation in Islamabad.
