SUKKUR: Opposition Leader in National Assembly Khursheed Shah on Monday said that the ‘government does not exist anymore.’

“A grand alliance is created each time elections are held,” Shah said, adding that the PPP won’t support a unity government.

He further said that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) wants elections to be held on time and the government to complete its tenure.

Earlier today, the ruling party — Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) — attempted to approach the PPP in light of the delimitation bill that was to be presented in the Senate.

According to a statement by Shah, PML-N had approached him through its ally Chief of Pakhtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) Mehmood Khan Achakzai.

"Achakzai requested our (PPP's) support on the delimitation bill," he said.

He also said that his party does not believe in any 'undemocratic and unconstitutional' process.

The Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2017 that pertains to the fresh delimitation of constituencies in line with the provisional results of the latest census in light of the general elections next year was expected to be taken up in the Senate today (Monday).

The upper house of the Parliament has thrice tried to pass the bill but absence of lawmakers, from both the opposition and treasury benches, has delayed the bill's approval.

A two-thirds majority is required by the house that comprises of 104 seats to pass the bill.

According to the new delimitation, Punjab's seat share in the National Assembly will decrease by nine seats, while Islamabad will get one more seat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa five and Balochistan three more.

Earlier, NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq had said after chairing a meeting of parliamentary parties that the total NA seats will remain 272 but there would be a change in the allocation of NA seats for the provinces.

On November 13, the Council of Common Interests (CCI) approved delimitation of new constituencies on the basis of provisional results of Population Census 2017, paving a way for timely conduct of next general elections.
