SSP Rao Anwar appears before court in Saleem Shehzad case

KARACHI: Senior Superintendent of Police Malir Rao Anwar appeared before the court in the case against former Muttahida Qaumi Movement member Saleem Shehzad.

While recording his statement before the Additional District and Sessions judge, Rao Anwar remarked that the forensic report of weapons use in the cases is not available.

Responding to this, the judge asked: “Why was the forensic of the weapons recovered from the suspect not conducted?”

Rao Anwar said that the practice is carried out in the cases registered in different districts.

On November 28, SSP Malir Rao Anwar had submitted a written apology to a local court over his continuous absence from the court proceedings.

Additional District and Sessions judge also expressed their anger over Malir SSP’s failure to follow court orders. “Why do you not follow the instructions of the court? Why shouldn’t you be sent to prison,” said the judge.

The judge added, “you will find it more convenient to appear before the court to record your statement from the prison than your house.”

Reacting to this, Rao Anwar apologised to the court and said that he skipped the proceedings fearing an attack by Taliban.

He later submitted a written apology, which was accepted by the court.

Due to the continuous absence of Rao Anwar, DSP Khalid and other personnel, the court had issued them a show-cause notice.

Three cases were registered against Saleem Shehzad at Landhi police station in 1992.

Saleem Shahzad to form new political party

Saleem Shahzad, former senior Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader and aide of party founder, has announced to form a new party and said he will contest next year's elections from the city's Orangi Town.

In an informal media talk outside City Court, Shahzad said that he will also field candidates in various constituencies in the city.

The former MQM leader said that everyone is welcome to join his party, but added that no "China-cutters or target killers" would be allowed. The party will comprise educated people, he added.

"There will be no dry-cleaning in our party either," he added.

He said that the party will hold a rally on December 16 in Orangi.
