KARACHI: Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Sunday said that a fresh spell of cold weather will hit Karachi from December 4 (Monday).

According to the Met office, the direction of the wind is likely to shift from north to south which will push the mercury down several degrees across the metropolis.

The minimum temperature in the city was recorded 17° Celsius on Wednesday. However, a change in the direction of winds is likely to intensify cold weather, a PMD official said.

The spell of cold weather will persist for a week, with the weather likely to remain moderately cool throughout the month of December.

The department has also forecast a dry weather with a cool night and hazy morning for Karachi in the next 24 hours.

A PMD official said that the minimum temperature is expected to range between 12 degrees Centigrade and 14 degrees Centigrade during the 24-hour period.

The minimum temperature recorded in Karachi on Sunday was 13.5 degrees Centigrade whereas the maximum temperature recorded was 29.5 degrees Centigrade.

Humidity in the morning was 43 percent while it was 16 percent in the evening.

Sindh’s coastal areas were expected, between December 3 and December 4, to witness the possible effects of ‘Ockhi’ – the powerful cyclone that barreled into Sri Lankan and Indian coasts and claimed over a dozen lives.

The coastal areas of Karachi, Thatta, and Badin were expected to witness the cyclone impacts, the PMD had said.

Authorities including the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), India’s Coast Guard and Navy have rescued about 223 fishermen and evacuated thousands of people from cyclone-hit areas, officials said, as they continued their operations on Saturday.
