QUETTA: Third polio case in Balochistan for 2017 was reported on Monday.

According to officials of the provincial health department, the new case has surfaced from Gulistan tehsil of Qilla Abdullah district in Balochistan.

The virus has been detected in a 16-month-old child in the area. His parents had refused to administer polio drops to him, which is why he contracted the virus, officials said.

The first case was reported in July this year from Chaman area of the same district, Qilla Abdullah. The second case was reported recently from Zhob district of Balochistan.

Qilla Abdullah is considered to be a high-risk area for polio in the province.

While a new case has been reported in the province, yet another polio drive kicked off here earlier in the day.

The new case has taken the count of polio victims reported in 2017 to eight from across Pakistan.
