Number of accidents, crimes reduced on N-5: DIG Abbass Malik
RAWALPINDI: Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Highways and Motorway Police Abbass Malik said on Thursday that owing to efficient performance of the police, the number of accidents were reduced to 143 this year as compared to 201 last year on N-5 North Zone.

In these accidents, 139 persons were killed while 220 others injured, he disclosed these figures while talking to a group of journalists representing Courts and Crime Association, Rawalpindi, here.

He said that 1.10 million tickets were issued to motorists on violation of traffic rules and fine amounting to Rs.429.72 million was imposed.

Giving the details, he said that 85,232 tickets were issued for over speeding while 32,020 drivers were fined for wrong overtaking.

He said 28,874 motorists were found using mobile phone during the driving, adding they were issued tickets under Section B-61.

Abbass Malik said that the condition of the seat belt was introduced for the safety of drivers and 56,532 drivers were booked for violation of seat belt.

He said that 81,325 drivers were imposed fine for improper loading while 262,440 for lane violation.

As many as 108,037 motorists were issued tickets for obstruction of traffic while 132,286 motorcyclists were charged for hot using helmets, he added.

The DIG informed that 7,424 vehicles were issued tickets for overloading of passengers this years.

The Highways and Motorway police also organized awareness session in which 1.44 million drivers were apprised about the traffic rules, he said and added during the awareness campaign, 158,013 booklets and 184,920 leaflets were distributed among the drivers.

About the reduction of crimes on the highways, he said during this period there were only nine incidents of dacoities, robberies and vehicles snatching while 15 such incidents were foiled by the police.

He said that 91 culprits of different crimes were held by the police while 53 children were repatriated to their parents.

Abbass Malik informed that this year, 41 stolen or snatched vehicles were recovered during this period.

He said in its public friendly policing campaigns, 22,037 gift pack were distributed among the motorists.

The DIG informed that his organization remained at forefront in helping the flood victims and sent 33 trucks of household and edible items were sent to different flood affected areas.

The medicines worth Rs.one million were also dispatched while free medical camps were also set up to provide medical treatment to flood victims.

He said the financial aid of Rs.751,000 was also provided besides sending 1,500 quilts were also provided to save the flood affectees from cold weather.

Responding to a question, he said the Highways and Motorway Police has been able to change the reputation of the police force, adding, now it is being considered as role model for other organizations.

About traffic rules, he said there is a need of strict implementation of traffic laws for the safety of the road users.
