ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister Senator Azam Swati on Monday said he had approached Prime Minister Imran Khan after several failed attempts at contacting Inspector General Police (IGP) Jan Muhammad over an incident at his farmhouse last week.
The incident, which is believed to have led to the transfer of IGP Muhammad's transfer on October 27, has made its way to the Supreme Court where Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar has taken suo motu notice of the matter.
According to reports, the IGP was transferred after he refused action on a complaint by Swati's son regarding the incident at the farmhouse which, the minister claims, led to three of his chowkidaars (guards) being injured.
Swati said he had made several attempts to contact the inspector-general to inform him regarding the incident and ensuing bomb threats from the "illegal occupants" who later beat up and injured his three guards.
The interior secretary told me that he had been trying to get in touch with the inspector-general himself for several hours but was unable to do so, Swati told Geo News.
"When I got in touch with him [IGP] on Thursday around 6:00PM, even then he did not do anything, as a result of which three of my chowkidaars (guards) were injured. Are they not citizens of Pakistan? Will the law of the land not be implemented here?
"My chowkidaar was told that you and your Khan would be eliminated in a bomb attack. I then informed the DSP, SSP, and then the IGP Islamabad. Even after 22 hours, despite several of my calls, no action was taken and three Pakistani citizens were injured," he said.
Swati said that his wounded employees were still admitted at the PIMS hospital.
"They will testify before the law. The onus of failure in protecting them is on IGP Islamabad," he said, adding that he would pursue legal discourse.
"I will appear before the chief justice in the court myself and narrate all the facts to him," he said.
When asked if he had contacted the interior minister or the prime minister over the matter, Swati said he had sent a text message to Prime Minister Imran Khan as well as submitting a written application to the Interior Ministry, Prime Minister Secretariat, Chairman Senate, and the leader of the House.
Earlier today, CJP Mian Saqib Nisar took suo motu notice of the transfer of the Islamabad IGP's transfer. A three-member bench headed by Justice Nisar was hearing a case when he took notice of Jan Muhammad's transfer.
The attorney general of Pakistan informed the SC that IGP Jan Muhammad was transferred on the "verbal orders of Prime Minister Imran Khan".
The chief justice directed the interior secretary and the attorney general to appear before the court and explain as to why the Islamabad IGP was transferred.
The top judge said, “We cannot tolerate political meddling in police. Governance of law should be maintained and we will not let our institutions falter."
Suspending the notification regarding the Islamabad IGP's transfer, the court adjourned the hearing of the case till tomorrow.
On October 27, the Islamabad IGP was transferred and ordered to report immediately to the Establishment Division until further orders. According to sources, the IGP was transferred after he refused action on a complaint by Swati's son.
