ISLAMABAD: The parliamentary leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Monday decided that Opposition Leader in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif will not be appointed the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee.
The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The lawmakers concluded that an impartial person would be selected in consultation with the prime minister.
Other parties will also be taken into confidence after that.
Opposition parties have slammed the government for refusing to give the position to Shehbaz, who is also the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz president.
PML-N earlier said it will withdraw all its members from the other committees in case it fails to gain chairmanship of the PAC.
On September 25, a session of the PML-N had decided to name party Shehbaz as its candidate for the slot.
Pakistan Peoples Party lawmaker Hina Rabbani Khar also criticised PTI early this month for reluctance on giving the chairmanship to opposition.
Speaking in the National Assembly, Khar said the government can’t make tall claims about accountability while refusing the opposition the slot.
The PAC is an important committee, which among other tasks, is authorised to examine Auditor General’s reports for ministries, divisions, corporations, etc.
