LONDON: Since touching down in Britain for a week-long private trip to raise funds for the construction of Diamer-Bhasha and Mohmand dams, Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar has been a target of fake news.
The internet, which is not kind to anyone, has been mercilessly hounding the top judge as he prepares to host a telethon to raise funds.
Fake news on social media suggested that the chief justice and his family are staying at the luxurious Dorchester Hotel in London, which costs a whopping £621.43 per night according to reports.
Another rumour making the rounds was that the chief justice's trip to the UK was paid for by a political party.
None of this is true.
A senior journalist reached out to Justice Nisar, who clarified that he and four members of his family are staying at the Marriot Hotel in Park Lane, and the trip is paid for by the judge himself.
The chief justice's trip has been organised by the Pakistani High Commission in the UK, which has also arranged a car for him.
Chief Justice Nisar only attended a dinner at the Dorchester hotel, upon the invitation of a fan.
The chief justice is scheduled to attend a fund-raising dinner in Manchester on November 23. The dinner is being organised by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf member and Prime Minister Imran Khan’s close friend Aneel Musarrat. On the same day, Geo News International will start a live telethon from Manchester for the construction of the dams.
A post released by a group, Imran Khan Lovers UK and Europe, said that it will be holding an event on the evening of November 25 to raise funds.
On November 26, the chief justice is scheduled to attend a ceremony of the World Congress and Overseas Pakistanis.
UK Pakistan Chamber of Commerce & Industries is also set to host a fund-raising event during the CJP’s visit.
