ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was taken to Adiala prison, Rawalpindi on Monday after he was sentenced to seven years in Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption case.

An accountability court hearing the corruption references, however, acquitted the former premier in Flagship Investment reference.

Nawaz listened to the verdict against him in the courtroom and appealed the court for ordering shifting him to Kot Lakhpat prison in Lahore instead of Adiala jail, Rawalpindi.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor opposed Nawaz's plea, but the court reserved its verdict on the appeal of former premier.

Announcing the verdict later, the accountability court ordered shifting Nawaz to Kot Lakhpat jail.

The former premier was taken to Adiala prison amid stringent security, where he would spend the night. Nawaz will be shifted to Kot Lakhpat prison on Tuesday.
