ISLAMABAD: President of Pakistan Arif Alvi on Wednesday gave approval for the appointment of Justice Asif Saeed Khosa as the chief justice of Pakistan, the Ministry of Law said in a statement.

The ministry said that Justice Khosa, who is the senior most judge of the Supreme Court, will take charge as the chief justice on January 18.

He assumed office of a Supreme Court judge in December 2016. Prior to that, Justice Khosa served as a judge of Lahore High Court.

The incumbent Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar will retire from his post on January 17.
