ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has ordered lifting of the ban on the entry of maids at elite clubs, to "remove symbols of elitism and colonial mindset", Minister of State for Interior Shehryar Afridi said on Wednesday.

Taking to Twitter, the state minister shared a picture of a sign barring the entry of maids and ayahs beyond a certain point and said, "Symbols of elitism and colonial mindset will be removed."

“Prime Minister Imran Khan has ordered to remove the ban on entry of maids/servants in elite clubs i.e. starting from Islamabad Club. Rather we should have been thankful to them [the maids] for carrying our weights. Abolish boundaries made in name of wealth, colour etc,” Afridi tweeted.

A day earlier, the premier while chairing a high-level session of the federal cabinet had directed immediate removal of all kinds of discriminatory sign-board in clubs and other public places that restrict the free movement of maids, ayas and domestic servants.

The federal government also decided to speed up measures to put an end to domestic abuse, child labour, capital punishment, forced disappearances and other forms of human rights violations.

It was also decided that a survey regarding child labour should be carried out in the country and the Bureau of Statistics should gather data within six months on it.
