ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Asif Saeed Khosa said Friday courts are blamed for high number of pending cases, while they are not at fault, rather someone else is.

The chief justice remarked during hearing of a case in the Supreme Court of Pakistan that pending cases could end in 1-2 years if appointments were made on 25 percent vacant positions for judges.

"There are only 3000 judges for 210 million population," he noted.

Justice Khosa said the number of cases pending with different courts stands at 1.9 million, adding that only the apex court announced verdicts of 26000 cases last year, while the US Supreme Court gave verdicts in only 80-90 cases last year.

He said despite a shortage of jurists, the judges were making all efforts to wrap up pending cases, but despite that, the people were still criticising the courts.

"God willing, circumstances will be improved soon given the way the judiciary is working hard. We are working day and night," the chief justice said.
