Pakistan and England face off today in their ICC Cricket World Cup match. This is the second match for both teams in the tournament with Pakistan losing their first match to West Indies and England securing a win against South Africa.
Pakistan and England have played 87 ODIs against each other with 53 wins for the Lions and 31 for the Green Shirts. Three of the matches were rained out. The team’s last played each other during the recently held ODI series with England winning four matches with one contest being rained out.
In the World Cup, Pakistan and England have split their encounters with four matches each and one match being rained out. Pakistan’s most prominent win against England was in the 1992 World Cup final. In that match, Pakistani bowlers were instrumental with Wasim Akram and Mushtaq Ahmed picking up three wickets each.
Pakistan have played 14 matches in Nottingham and the outcome has been split. Of these 14 matches, Pakistan have played England eight times with five losses and three wins. This will be the first time both teams play at Trent Bridge in a World Cup.
The last time Pakistan beat England at Trent Bridge was in 1996, after which England won three ODIs in 2006, 2016 and 2019.
England have scored the two highest ODI run totals in history at this ground. On 30 August 2016 the team scored 444 against Pakistan and on 19 June 2018 scored 481 against Australia. Alex Hales scored 171 against Pakistan and 147 against the Aussies, but he is not part of England’s 2019 World Cup squad.
English Capitan Eoin Morgan has been successful at this ground winning three of the six matches played under his captaincy with only one loss. The other matches were drawn and rained out. Morgan has also scored 462 runs at this ground.
Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed has lost both matches he has captained at this ground. Both losses came in 2019, the first against England in the ODI and then against West Indies at the World Cup.
If Sarfaraz wins the toss he should choose to field, because the team which fields first has won 25 matches, compared to 18 for the team batting first. England and West Indies also elected to field when they won the toss against Pakistan.
