KARACHI: A man in the city's Surjani Town allegedly tortured and killed his wife with the help of his sister and mother, police ascertained on Monday during the initial investigation a day after the woman's body was found with a noose around her neck.

It was initially suspected that the woman — identified as Beenish — had committed suicide but, upon further probe and questioning, it turned out that she had been murdered by her husband, Zafar Iqbal, sister-in-law Nasreen, and mother-in-law.

Surjani Town police station said they have registered a first information report (FIR), which includes a clause of murder and names the deceased's husband, Zafar Iqbal, sister-in-law Nasreen, and mother-in-law as the main suspects.

The FIR was filed on behalf of the woman's brother, who, in the text of the case, indicated that his sister was married to Iqbal almost two-and-a-half years ago and Nasreen, the sister-in-law, used beat and torture Beenish.

Police further noted that they have arrested the husband — the primary suspect — and sister-in-law Nasreen from Surjani Town's Saiful Mulook Goth area yet the investigation was ongoing and Iqbal and the other family members were being questioned.

Late Beenish's brother also explained that his sister had come home with Iqbal, her husband, on June 30. A neighbour of his sister then informed him of her death sometime after she had returned home with Iqbal.

She was found hanging from the ceiling but that her legs were touching the ground, he said, adding that she was tortured and killed.
