KARACHI: A mother of an infant was shot dead, apparently in the name of honour, in Karachi on Thursday, said the police.

Sidra, who hails from Faisalabad, died on the spot after she was shot by two unidentified assailants at her house in Sector 5-B which lies in the jurisdiction of Surjani Town Police Station.

Her body was later taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

SHO Iftikhar Ahmed Qureshi, while speaking to The News, said that the 33-year-old and her husband had contracted a freewill marriage in Faislabad nearly four years ago.

He added that the couple were living in Karachi with their eight-month-old daughter.

Qureshi added that Sidra’s husband, Nasir, was at work when the incident took place. The official also said that the family had initially reported that the 33-year-old was killed upon resisting a mugging or was hit by a stray bullet.

However, police after conducting their initial investigation believe that the women was murdered.

The official said that Sidra was murdered over honour but they were probing the case from different angles, and were also questioning the husband.

The police said that the husband claimed that his in-laws, especially his brother-in-laws, may have been behind the killing as they were against their marriage.

Qureshi added that an 18-year-old was also injured when the suspects fired on the crowd which had gathered outside the victims house after hearing the gunshots. The victim was identified as Nabeel and was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
