13 seconds is all it takes to steal a motorcycle, including four to break the handle lock and three to switch on the ignition using a special tool. In another 10, the thief sat on it, started it, and would drive away.
Shah Latif Town police apprehended from under a bridge in Quaidabad a thief involved in several bike thefts and hit the jackpot — it turned out that the man they detained is also the one who made this tool.
The tool looks like an edged knife from the front and resembles a handle from the back, according to the accused, who confessed during the probing.
Police were left awestruck when they asked the thief to show them how he performed the theft. It took him a mere four seconds to break open the handle lock, three to switch on the ignition, and another 10 to start the bike and ride on it.
In a total of 23 seconds, he took away a common man’s ride.
An estimated of 22,000 motorcycles were stolen in the metropolis in 2019, costing a whopping Rs455 million — based on bike priced between Rs20,000-25,000.
While it is up to law enforcement agencies to combat the growing crime rate, motorcycle manufacturing companies at the same time should install the required safety features to fight bike thefts.
