Accused in alleged stoning to death of minor girl remanded into Dadu police custody

DADU: Three of the men accused in the alleged honour-killing of a minor girl were remanded into police custody on Sunday after being presented to the district session judge.

Dadu police also submitted a petition to the judge, requesting the nine-year-old's body be exhumed after she was allegedly killed as karo-kari — or stoned to death over the so-called honour in Wahi Pandhi. The three men arrested over the alleged honour-killing were identified as the nine-year-old's father Ali Bakhsh, Moulvi Mumtaz Laghari, and a facilitator of her funeral and burial.

The senior superintendent of police (SSP) for Dadu, Farrukh Raza, confirmed that the exhumation request has been submitted to the additional district and session judge in order to carry out a medical inspection under the local magistrate's supervision.

According to police spokesperson, Abdul Razzaq Qambrani, a total of five people were named in the first information report (FIR), three of whom have been arrested while raids were being carried out to search for and detain the remaining two. Qambrani said the nine-year-old's family was a group of nomads who keep moving from one place to another since they trade between Sindh and Balochistan.

On the other hand, locals protested for the release of Moulvi Mumtaz Laghari so that the deceased girl's funeral prayers could be offered. They demonstrators demanded that Laghari's name be removed from the case.
