Karachi Eat 2020 was definitely bigger, better, and much more organised as opposed to its prior iterations. Many stalls continued to run out of stock while others had such long queues that they ended up a pathway at the centre of the venue.
After a great experience, Geo.tv has compiled a list of most mouthwatering food-on-the-go from both established and newbie eateries:
Made in a waffle-maker-like utensil, Ebiyaki looked especially tempting because Yoshi's were making it fresh for every order and the sizzling batter turning into hardened, golden balls was just too good!
"Our dish is called Ebiyaki — they’re balls filled with shrimp and it’s a Japanese street food," Rameez, a Yoshi's representative, told Geo.tv. "Traditionally, in Japan, they’re called Takoyaki as Tako means octopus and they’re filled with octopus there.
"It’s an Osaka-style street food snack and we’re using prawns and since prawns are called Ebi so it’s called Ebiyaki," he added.
Wrapped in a fresh-off-the-stove waffle cone, Waffle Chicken was absolutely delicious with a generous filling of hot fried chicken dipped in a sauce.
According to Abdul Razzaq, one of the Clucky’s team members: "We have a small menu but it depends on what you desire [to eat]; if it's mild spicy, we have mild spicy, if it's spicy, we have sweet and spicy!"
Owais, the manager, on the other hand, said they had three bases — waffle cone, tandoori rice, and fries and bite — and then the customer could choose a sauce. The most popular of their offerings was Waffle Chicken (of course!).
"Very delicious," said one of the customers as we spoke to the Mamu Seafood Grill team. So we had them to check for ourselves. The prawns had a tikka masala flavour on it and were barbecued.
The eatery had not just used BBQ sauce but made it with tikka masala flavour. They were not overcooked and had an amazing texture.
According to one of the team members, Murtaza, their speciality was the unique seafood. They were also selling Blue Crab as "it's very rare and we're not really making any money off of it [no profit]. We just wanted people to have it."
Moreover, they were also selling mackerel, which was a favourite as well apart from the prawns.
With "desserts that are not otherwise available" on the menu, Madiha and her team were offering Fudge Brownies, Pavlova, and Cannoli.
"From the USA, we have fudge brownies with cream cheese swirl; they're available in mint, strawberry, and roasted almond flavours," Madiha explained.
"From Australia, we have Pavlova; it's egg-white, cream cheese, cream, and fruits that include kiwi, cherry, and strawberry. And from Italy … Sicily, really … we have Cannoli; it includes a ricotta cheese filling, as well as cinnamon and nutmeg, and it's offered in chocolate and custard flavours," she added.
Tiny, palm-sized half-potato balls, the Kuiya looked super appealing sitting smugly in cupcake wrappers. Mustaqeem, the salesperson, described them as "potato pockets in three flavours — BBQ, pizza, and masala — four pieces each in a serving".
Mustaqeem added that this year, they introduced the dahi bara burger and raj puri.
Given in a double pizza paper plate, Fry Kabab Naan was something that we could not wait to get hands on. With fried kebab oozing out from the sides of the pita-cum-naan, it was just heavenly … piping hot, steam rising from between the layers, and perfectly tasty!
First came the unadulterated macaroni and cheese, then came the topping of chicken cubes with spices, some Cheetos dust and crumbs sprinkled all over that gooey beauty, and then came whole pieces of Cheetos garnishing the masterpiece.
"Oooof!" is all we managed to say as we dug in.
