Karachi police chief bars officials from posting videos on social media

Such practice is illegal and against the norms of the discipline service, says Additional IG Ghulam Nabi Memon

Karachi police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon has directed all three zonal deputy inspectors general (DIGs) to ask the staff not to upload any video about their work on social media, reported The News on Thursday.

The police chief also warned that officials violating the order would be suspended and strict departmental action would be taken against them.

“It is being noticed with grave concern that police officials are uploading videos related to police work and activity on social media. Such practice is illegal and against the norms of the discipline service,” IG Memon said.

He added, “You are required to direct all the subordinate staff that in future no one shall upload any of such video clips on social media."

However, such videos may be used as a piece of evidence for any inquiry or investigation. Those who violate this order should be placed under suspension and strict departmental action be taken against him,” a communiqué dispatched by the Karachi police chief to zonal DIG read.

According to APP, Senior Superintendent of Police, South Shiraz Nazir on Wednesday said details of the culprits involved in circulating old or irrelevant videos against police were being shared with Federal Investigation Agency authorities (FIA).

He said that such elements were sharing these videos to demoralise police personnel. About the videos, he said that CCTV footage of Faislabad was being portrayed as a video of Karachi police. Similarly, a two-year-old video of an incident at Sea View was also being circulated.

The officer said that another one-year-old video of Clifton police personnel taking a bribe was being shared over social media. "Action will be taken against all those personnel involved," he said.

He appealed to the citizens not to share or circulate any video without confirming its authenticity.
