PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on Tuesday announced that the province was reporting a decline in the number of coronavirus-related deaths and cases, with only three three fatalities taking place in the last 24 hours.

Health Secretary Syed Imtiaz Hussain, while apprising about the virus situation in the province, said previously more than 24 deaths per day were being reported in the province, however, the number has seen a decline in the past few days.

He added that the number of coronavirus-affected patients who were receiving treatment at various hospitals across the province has also decreased, with fewer patients on ventilators and ICU units as compared to before.

Hussain further said that the province might see a spike in cases if people do not abide by the standard operating procedures (SOPs) during Eid-ul-Azha.

Pakistan reports 28% reduction in critical COVID-19 cases

On Sunday the National Command and Control Centre (NCOC) said there had been a 28% reduction in critical coronavirus cases in the country due to a “smart lockdown” and the implementation of SOPs.

According to the NCOC, the government’s decision to impose “smart lockdown” in areas reporting a spike in cases has produced the desired result as the number of cases has seen a steady decline.

Quoting data collected by Express Tribune, the NCOC had said: “a significant reduction in the number of positive cases has emerged as the country crossed the 100-day mark in its fight against coronavirus".

It added, “Smart lockdowns, a stronger enforcement effort, compliance of SOPs and the nationwide change in the behaviour can be credited for the current gains in the fight against COVID-19.”
