India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wants Bollywood actors to support its stance or become victims to social media trolls relentlessly instigated by the government and its army of supporters.
According to a special report by Gulf News, Modi's BJP has a clear agenda to align the hugely-followed Bollywood celebrities with its ideologies — which has now caused a rift in the industry.
"While some B and C grade actors have jumped on board the BJP, the real superstars, the trinity of the Khans — Aamir, Shah Rukh and Salman — have kept the BJP and Modi at arm’s length," read the report.
The news report provides a reference to the aforementioned stance with Amir Khan's recent meeting with Turkish First Lady Amina Ardavan in Turkey where he went to shoot his film, Lal Singh Chadha.

Following the meeting, Khan was bashed unabatedly on social media where BJP MP Subramanian Swamy demanded that Khan be quarantined for two weeks post his return from Turkey.
“When Khan talked about his wife leaving India in 2015, then maybe he must have thought of going to Turkey and settling down there,” one of the panelists was found alleging about the Dangal star on Indian media.
The report further highlights that this was not the first instance that Khan was browbeaten and criticised for not supporting India's ruling party's ideologies. The Rang De Basanti star had previously become a victim of political animosity when Snapdeal was asked to drop him as a brand ambassador via an organised campaign.
