5.8 quake hits eastern Indonesia
JAKARTA: A moderate 5.8-magnitude quake struck off Indonesia's eastern Maluku islands Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The quake struck at 10:38 pm local time (1338 GMT) at a relatively shallow depth of 16 kilometres (10 miles) 310 kilometres northwest of Ambon, the USGS said.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity. (AFP)
