Skipper MS Dhoni topscored with 57 not out and paceman James Pattinson captured four for 43.
Sachin Tendulkar was out for 41 as he chased his 100th international century against Australia in the second Test.
Tendulkar, who has been stranded on 99 Test and one-day international centuries since March 2011, was dismissed when he was bowled off an inside edge by paceman James Pattinson.
