ISLAMABAD: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) will now give women the choice to retain their fathers' names on their Computerised National Identity Cards after marriage.
NADRA Chairman Tariq Malik, while addressing the Annual Rural Women’s Conference in Islamabad, said that the new policy would enable women to either retain their father's title or replace it with the husband's name on their CNICs.
It should be noted that previously, it was mandatory for women to use their husbands' names on their CNIC upon a change in their marital statuses.
Malik announced that a special department, comprising female members for framing a policy for the registration of women with NADRA for the acquisition of a National Identity Card (NIC), has been set up.
Malik paid tribute to the female social workers' team that worked for the successful registration of 5,000 women with NADRA in Jacobabad. He stressed all women get their NICs issued at the earliest.
Corrigendum: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that "NADRA has changed its policy that requires women to change their surnames after marriage." The error is regretted and has been rectified.
