ISLAMABAD: The counsel for Prime Minister Aitzaz Ahsan says the matter was not of the writing the letter to Swiss authorities, but rather if contempt was committed by not doing so.
Ahsan added that the prime minister sincerely believed that the president had immunity.
Aitzaz during his arguments in the contempt case said that the president enjoyed immunity under the constitution and the letter to Swiss authorities could not be written till Zardari remained president.
To this Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani replied if the letter would be written if the court proved that the president did not have immunity.
Aitzaz asked the court for one month’s time to prepare for this case to which Justice Khosa replied that he (Aitzaz) could all the necessary records within one day.
The court ordered Ahsan to submit his reply on February 1 when the court will resume its hearing.
After concluding his arguments Aitzaz Ahsan spoke to the media outside the Supreme Court and said that it was a historic day in Pakistan that the elected prime minister appeared before the court
'Respect of courts is our prime responsibility.' President enjoys blanket immunity in this case, Ahsan added.
'The case was not of presidential immunity but now it has become such,' Ahsan said.
