ISLAMABAD: Clarifying a recent fiery speech by Asif Ali Zardari, senior PPP leader Sherry Rehman on Friday said that the PPP co-chairman's remarks were aimed at former military dictators and not the current leadership of the armed forces.
"Army chief Gen Raheel Sharif is an honest and true commander, and we have the highest respect for him," said Ms Rehman alongside senior leader Qamar Zaman Kaira as they addressed media representatives following an Iftar dinner at the Zardari House here.
She said that the party co-chairman had referred to former dictators in his speech, as the PPP had faced military dictators in the past and would continue to do so in the future.
Former information minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said that the PPP desires harmony between all political forces and state institutions. He added that all parties were supporting the ongoing security operation in Karachi.
Kaira said that Zardari’s speech reflected the thoughts of all party members, and that nobody had asked the co-chairman to retract his statement.
He said that Zardari's policy of reconciliation would continue and that this was also the party's policy.
