NASU: Sessho-seki, a stone believed to be holding an evil spirit, was found broken in half, which has people in Japan wondering whether the demonic power has escaped and is now free, reported NDTV.
The stone itself holds significance in Japanese mythology. It reportedly kills whoever comes in contact with it, since it held the spirit of a woman who, a long time ago, tried to kill Emperor Toba by deceiving him with her looks.
The stone was found split in half on Sunday by visitors who were sightseeing this piece that was marked historical in 1957.
"I feel like I've seen something that shouldn't be seen," one user on Twitter wrote. The picture that was posted along the caption was liked by over 180,000 people.
While people continue to be fearful about Sessho-seki's splitting, the local authorities have given natural reasons to explain why it broke. The stone had cracks and the cold weather may have caused it to split.
