WARSAW: The Vice-President of the United States (US) Kamala Harris was criticised on social media for bursting into laughter when she was asked about whether the US will allow more Ukrainian refugees to enter the country or not, NDTV reported.
The problematic incident occurred when she was addressing a joint press conference with Polish President Andrzej Duda in Poland on Thursday.
A reporter asked Kamala if the US is willing to make a "specific allocation for Ukrainian refugees." The reporter continued to ask what the US would do to set up a more "permanent infrastructure" for the Ukrainian refugees.
Before asking the question, the reporter explained that "the refugee system will collapse" if not prepared proactively. The refugee matter is currently an improvised structure that can work for two weeks and not indefinitely, she added.
Kamala could be seen locking eyes with the President for a few seconds after the question was asked. Following that, she burst out laughing after commenting "a friend in need is a friend indeed."
The reporter herself explained after the needless laughter that the need for this question rose because the situation is "very complex."
Users on social media could not comprehend Kamala's reaction to such a serious issue.
One user commented that it is "hard to pretend when you have no idea what to say."
The Post Millennial asked, "why is Kamala Harris laughing?"
She is "cringe personified."
Kamala needs to "stifle" her laughter, wrote one user.
More than 2.3 million people have fled Ukraine as of March 10. Around 1.43 million Ukrainians have fled to Poland while more than 291,081 Ukrainians have fled to Romania, according to the United Nations. This could be the biggest humanitarian crisis in Europe since the Second World War.
