While weddings in South Asia are joyous occasions for the groom, bride, as well as their friends and families, a lot of weird wedding-related incidents have lately started surfacing on social media.

From beating the bride to refusing marriage without a dowry to rejecting a groom for being bald, netizens have seen it all over the last few months. And now, a man from Dandeli, situated in the Indian state of Karnataka, is making headlines after he refused to marry his bride as she uses her left hand to eat.

In India, it is against etiquette to eat with one's left hand and is considered disrespectful.

According to a report by Daijiworld.com, a couple was getting married at the Lord Shiva temple in Kolagi in Dandeli where the groom almost disowned his newlywed bride and threatened to call the wedding off because she was a left-handed person.

Per the piece, both families had mutually agreed to the wedding and everything was going as per the schedule, but on the day of the wedding as the food was served and the couple started eating together, the groom noticed that his bride was eating with her left hand.

The discovery made him upset and he decided to call the wedding off, saying that such behaviour was "unacceptable" in his family. His parents also reportedly supported the decision and threatened the bride's family to take the barat back.

Panicked by the decision, the girl's parents requested the groom and his family not to take such a drastic step and asked them to "settle the misunderstandings through mutual discussions."

They said that since the girl had a disability, it was difficult to use her right hand to eat. Per the report, the groom and her parents had agreed to the wedding despite knowing that the girl had a disability.

As the groom and his family decided not to budge and remained adamant that they would call the wedding off, the girl's relatives decided to call the 112 police helpline.

As the police arrived at the wedding venue along with a lady constable, they tried to convince the groom's family to reconsider the decision.

Resultantly, the police took the couple and their families to a counselling centre where the groom was advised not to take such a drastic step and ruin a girl's life.

After some consultation, the groom and his family got convinced and decided to continue with the wedding festivities and take the bride home, the report said.
