Considered to be one of the greatest female basketball players, the Double Olympic champion was detained by the Russian Federal Customs Service after vape cartridges containing hashish oil were found in her luggage at an airport near Moscow.

Drug-sniffing dogs signified the potential presence of narcotic drugs in the champion’s carry-on luggage after her arrival from New York. The examination led to the discovery of the drugs which is a criminal violation under Russian law.

A video was also released by the Customs Service which shows her luggage being inspected.

In a statement to The Guardian, Griner’s agent Lindsay Colas said: “We are aware of the situation with Brittney Griner in Russia and are in close contact with her.”

Griner has a long list of notable achievements including being a seven-time WNBA All-Star and leading Phoenix to the franchise’s third-ever title in 2014.
