A 61-year-old man is all set to sail all the way to France from the US, covering 4,000 miles, all on his own, CNN reported.

Peter Harley, plans to start at Virginia Beach and row to La Trinité-sur-Mer, France.

He estimates the journey to be a minimum of three months.

"I'm not nervous," said Harley. "I've been in boats at sea in South Africa for many years, so I kind of know what's coming and I'm not afraid of it."

Harley is originally from South Africa and moved to US in 2019.

He has complete faith in his 24-foot rowboat that has a storage space, a sleeping cabin, and some solar panels.

"The bathroom, I'm afraid, is just a bucket," Harley joked.

The vessel also carries a desalinator, which helps convert ocean water into drinking water and purifies it.

The solar panels will help with staying in touch with family.

Harley said that the preparation of such a journey is no joke. It requires "requires a tremendous amount of discipline, dedication and focus".

"Preparation for the trans-Atlantic journey has been no joke: 28 months of training, 13 of which were 7 days a week."

Harley has been preparing himself for almost a year. He changed his eating habits eight months ago to adjust his body for time away from kitchen. On board, he will eat protein bars, oatmeal, and pasta.

His daughter, Bonnie Evans, is equally excited about the journey and says she is not scared at all.

The adventurer had tried the journey before but unfortunately failed. If he is able to complete it this time and reaches France, he will be the first one to do so, creating a record.
