More judges in district courts needed: CJP

ISLAMABAD: Meeting of the Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan (LJCP) was held today (Saturday) at the Supreme Court (SC) under the chairmanship of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

While addressing the meeting, the CJP said there is a need to appoint more judges in district courts in order to provide timely justice to the masses.

The formal announcement regarding the decisions made in the meeting will be made by evening.

The meeting was attended by Justice Agha Rafiq Ahmed Khan, Chief Justice Federal Shariat Court Justice Qazi Faez Isa, Chief Justice Balochistan High Court Justice Mushir Alam, Chief Justice Sindh High Court Justice Sh. Azmat Saeed, Chief Justice Lahore High Court Justice Dost Muhammad Khan, Chief Justice Peshawar High Court, Irfan Qadir, Attorney General of Pakistan, senior officials of the federal law ministry and some members of the legal community.

The commission considered several Law Reform Proposals, including amendments in Section 426 & 497 of the Criminal Procedure Code, (CPC) 1898, relating to the grant of bail to pregnant women and mothers of suckling babies, languishing in jails, enhancement of jurisdiction of Family Court and enhancing the scope of Smoking and Protection of Non-Smokers Health Ordinance, 2002.
