Updated Wednesday Oct 19 2022
A video shared thousands of times on social media claims to show a lake in Pakistan’s mountainous Gilgit-Baltistan.
The claim is false.
Claim
A Twitter account, “Gilgit Baltistan in Pictures”, shared a short clip on October 10 with the caption: “Just Stunning” as well as the flag of Pakistan.
The clip alleges to show a lake in Gilgit-Baltistan. The Twitter account has over 110,000 followers and states in its bio that it “aims to promote tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan”.
The footage has racked up more than 15,000 views and 171 retweets as users debated whether it shows Gilgit-Baltistan or not.
Fact
Geo Fact Check used several reverse search engines, such as Google Lens, InVid, Yandex and Getty Images, as well as YouTube to determine the veracity of the claim.
The footage is in fact from the Lovatnet lake in Norway. A longer version of the clip was shared on TikTok on August 16.
Images and videos available on YouTube and Travel magazines of the Lovatnet lake show the same mountains and landscape in the background, as in the clip posted by Gilgit-Baltistan in Pictures.
The lake is in Norway and not in Gilgit-Baltistan.
