Australia emerged triumphant in the one-off Ashes Test match, defeating England by 89 runs and taking a commanding 4-0 lead in the multi-format series. The star of the match was spinner Ash Gardner, who claimed eight wickets for just 66 runs, dismantling England's batting lineup as they were bowled out for 178 before lunch on the fifth day at Trent Bridge.
Gardner's remarkable performance resulted in her securing an astonishing 12 wickets in the match, following her four-wicket haul in England's first innings. England's hopes were pinned on Danni Wyatt, who top-scored with 54 before being given out lbw to Gardner, leading to Australia wrapping up the victory inside 21 overs on the final day.
Starting the day at 116-5, England faced an uphill battle, requiring another 152 runs for victory. Wyatt and night watcher Kate Cross added 25 runs for the sixth wicket before Cross was caught behind by Gardner for 13. Gardner then proceeded to claim all five remaining wickets, and England slumped from 151-6 to being all out for 178. Wyatt struggled to find support from England's lower order as Amy Jones contributed just four runs before being stumped by Alyssa Healy, Sophie Ecclestone was dismissed lbw for 10, and Lauren Filer was bowled for a duck.
The defeat was a bitter blow for Tammy Beaumont, who scored a magnificent 208 in England's first innings, as well as for Ecclestone, who also achieved a 10-wicket haul in the match but was overshadowed by Gardner's exceptional performance.
The series will continue with three T20 matches and three one-day internationals, each worth two points, starting at Edgbaston on Saturday, July 1.
