England captain Millie Bright has expressed confidence in her ability to return to the pitch for the Lionesses' World Cup campaign, despite undergoing knee surgery.

The Chelsea defender has been sidelined since March due to the injury but remains optimistic about her recovery progress. Bright's determination and commitment to representing her country in the upcoming tournament in Australia and New Zealand shines through as she continues her rehabilitation.

"I feel mentally and physically fresh as I have ever felt," Bright stated, emphasising her positive mindset and physical readiness. The 29-year-old, who was chosen as the team's skipper for the World Cup after Leah Williamson's anterior cruciate ligament injury, is eager to make a strong comeback. Having played a crucial role in England's Euro 2022 victory and Chelsea's successful domestic campaign, Bright sees the injury as a blessing in disguise, allowing her body to rest and rejuvenate after an intense schedule.

Despite missing the final World Cup warm-up friendly against Portugal, Bright is "really confident" about her availability for the opening game of the tournament. Training with her teammates and feeling fit, she believes the recovery process is progressing ahead of schedule. The centre-back's absence against Portugal will be compensated by the ample time before England's first game against Haiti on July 22 in Brisbane.

"I'm exactly where I want to be," Bright expressed, indicating her satisfaction with her recovery progress. Alongside individual training plans for Laura Coombs, Lucy Staniforth, and Jordan Nobbs, Bright's focus remains on gradually returning to full fitness. The England captain acknowledged the cautious approach, not wanting to rush her return and risk further setbacks.

Bright's absence has allowed her to reflect on the immense physical toll she has endured in recent years. Acknowledging the grueling schedule and minutes played, she considers the injury a chance to reset and allow her body to fully recover. Her determination to lead the Lionesses in the World Cup remains unwavering, and she aims to replicate her previous success on the international stage.

With England encountering another injury scare as defender Alex Greenwood limped off the pitch during training, Bright's positive outlook becomes even more crucial. The team's preparation for the World Cup opener against Haiti continues, with only a closed-door friendly on the horizon.

As England's captain, Millie Bright's optimism and perseverance serve as a beacon of hope for the Lionesses. Her return to full fitness would undoubtedly boost the team's prospects in the upcoming World Cup and provide a significant morale boost for her teammates.
