Fighting through cramps, Glenn Maxwell smashed an unbeaten 201 off 128 balls, guiding Australia to an unexpected win over Afghanistan in Tuesday's match at the World Cup 2023.
Apart from the victory that sealed the Kangaroos' spot in the semi-finals, the magnificent knock by the Aussie batter broke several records in the history of cricket.
Australia’s complete chase of the 291-run total posted by Afghanistan, powered by Maxwell’s power-hitting registered the highest match aggregate in an ODI match between Australia and Afghanistan.
Hitting an incredible double century, Maxwell scored an unbeaten 201, which is the highest individual score by any Australian batter. The score smashed the record of former Aussie cricketer Shane Watson, who posted 185 runs in a match against Bangladesh in 2011.
Besides smashing an individual double century, Maxwell also stitched a spectacular 202-run unbeatable partnership with skipper Pat Cummins on 8th wicket in an ODI match. This was Australia’s biggest-ever partnership in an ODI match, after the 119-run stand between Shane Warne and Paul Reiffel.
The 202-run stand between the Aussie pair also broke the record of 138-run partnership between South Africa’s Andrew Hall and Justin Kemp.
