Former first lady Melania Trump made a rare public appearance at a naturalisation ceremony where 25 immigrants were sworn in as US citizens.

Melania, who acquired US citizenship in 2006, has maintained a low profile since the Trump administration, with occasional appearances like attending former first lady Rosalynn Carter's memorial service last month.

Criticism arose in Washington, DC, due to the contrast between Melania's presence at the ceremony and Donald Trump's stringent immigration stance, a focal point of his political career.

Before delivering her speech, Melania's office released a statement, expressing her anticipation in sharing her naturalized citizen story and being part of the significant occasion for the new American citizens.

According to CNN, Melania Trump was invited to speak by US archivist Colleen Shogan, who previously worked at the White House Historical Association.

Melania's recent public appearance diverges from her usual avoidance of the spotlight, a trend coinciding with her husband's increased legal challenges and renewed presidential campaign efforts.

While Melania Trump has occasionally addressed crucial topics, such as racial harmony and the impact of the coronavirus, her unexpected participation in the naturalization ceremony marks a departure from her recent public reticence.
