Auto enthusiasts and collectors are eagerly anticipating the auction of a legendary piece of automotive history – the exceptionally rare 1966 Ford GT40 MkI Road Car.
This metallic dark blue beauty, with a black interior and right-hand drive, has hit the market through Mecum Auctions, with an estimated value reaching up to $7 million.
Described as one of Ford's great masterpieces, the GT40 holds a special place in automotive history. Sam Murtaugh, COO of Mecum Auctions, highlighted its rarity: "To put it in perspective, when a Picasso masterpiece comes to market, art collectors know that if they don’t act, it may never see the light of day again."
Listed as one of only 30 GT40 Road Cars ever built, this gem has a mere 13,442 miles on the odometer and has been hidden from public view for the past three decades under its fourth owner. AutoBlog.com notes, "The result is a barely used, Concours-quality GT40 that might have just 29 brothers and sisters on the planet."
The allure of the GT40 lies not only in its rarity but also in its power and iconic design. Renowned for toppling the Ferrari dynasty at Le Mans, France, the GT40 holds a special place in the hearts of auto enthusiasts worldwide.
Mecum Auctions describes it as "perhaps the most successful and iconic American racing car ever built," shaping automotive history by challenging the European manufacturers dominating sports car racing.
The GT40's journey to prominence began after a failed deal between Ferrari and Ford. Henry Ford II, determined to outdo Ferrari, succeeded with the GT40, ending Ferrari's Le Mans dynasty in 1966. The GT40 not only won the race but secured the top three spots, marking a historic moment in American automotive consciousness.
This rare masterpiece is currently up for bid at Mecum's Kissimmee, Florida 2024 showcase, captivating auto enthusiasts with its rich history, stunning design, and valuation that reflects its legendary status in the automotive world.
