Pat McAfee returned to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) as a guest commentator, marking the first surprise of the organisation's annual Royal Rumble, an event that has become known for its shocking returns.

While the National Football League (NFL) punter-turned-media mogul has come to be known for his daily show, "The Pat McAfee Show", he also has an extensive track record with WWE.

McAfee signed a multiyear contract with WWE in 2018, following his guest appearances on NXT shows. He hosted watch-alongs and continued to work as an occasional commentator.

In 2020, McAfee engaged in a feud with wrestler Adam Cole, leading to his debut match.

Later, in 2021, he became the colour commentator on WWE's SmackDown show and occasionally participated in matches, including a WrestleMania 38 match against Vince McMahon.

Additionally, in September 2022, after signing an extension with WWE, McAfee announced a hiatus from SmackDown to focus on an ESPN show.

WWE has not yet reintroduced him as a full-time wrestler, but he has made appearances, including at last year's Royal Rumble.

WWE has also maintained a regular presence on McAfee's show, particularly following the show’s move to ESPN last fall.
