Justice Khawaja to take oath as new CJP tomorrow
ISLAMABAD: Incumbent Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Nasirul Mulk is retiring on Sunday and President Mamnoon Hussain has already approved appointment of senior most judge of the Supreme Court Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja as the new CJP.

Justice Khawaja will take oath of office tomorrow (Monday).

Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja was born on September 10, 1950 in Wazirabad District in Punjab’s Gujranwala. He completed his graduation in Arts from FC College Lahore in 1971 before taking up LLB from the Punjab University Law College Lahore completing it in 1973. He then obtained a Masters in Law (LLM) degree from the University of California Berkeley in 1975.

Thereafter, he was enrolled as Advocate of the High Court in 1975 and as an Advocate of the Supreme Court in 1985. He was a regular legal practitioner until his appointment as a Judge of the Lahore High Court on April 21 1999. Justice Khawaja resigned his constitutional tenure on March 19 2007.

After resigning he taught law at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) and headed the Department of Law and Policy there.

He was then appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan on June 5, 2009 by then Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
