Authorities in Chicago said that two SUVs were involved in a deadly road accident at the 4200 block of South Pulaski Road in which one person was killed and six others were critically injured.
Officials did not release any information about the identities and ages of the victims, except for their genders saying the deceased one was a male.
The accident took place just after 2am, according to Chicago police.
It also said that three females and two males were taken to hospitals. Their condition is reported to be critical.
Police also reported that another woman was also transported to the hospital in critical condition. Officials did not release the identities of the victims.
A witness was quoted as saying in the ABC Chicago report: "We saw a woman lying down. We think she was alive, but she wasn't really moving."
The witness also said: "Then we saw about three or four other people. They were sitting upright but they were moved by stretchers."
"I live on Pulaski just a little further south, and there are a lot of accidents on Pulaski," the witness said. "So it's really sad to see that this continues to happen."
People living in the area believe that it's time to find other ways to make Pulaski, which has a long history of overspeeding, drag racing, drifting, and overall reckless driving, safer.
"It's been a very tough week on Pulaski Rd," 14th Ward Alderwoman Jeylú Gutiérrez said in a statement.
"A few days ago I requested to meet with CDOT. Today's incident once again shows the urgency to make this stretch safer. I plan to engage CDOT, the planning department, and constituents to come up with a comprehensive plan to come up with solutions to this problem."
