As the world's famous billionaire and CEO of SpaceX Elon Musk terminated his contract with the former CNN anchor on his platform X — earlier called Twitter — Wednesday, Don Lemon asked people to decide for themselves if there was any reason to be "upset" or be "mad" about.

In his video message on Instagram, the 58-year-old TV journalist said: "Elon Musk is mad at me and I just put out a statement about what happened between him, me and the interview that he is apparently so upset about."

"But make no mistake about this," he added, urging people to watch his interview with the CEO of X on March 18.

He also warned that his relationship is now under strain with Elon and X.

Some of the clips of Lemon's interview have been released in which the journalist is asking about the increasing hate speech on X and asking if the CEO has some responsibility to moderate it.

The 52-year-old Musk replied: "I don’t have to answer this question. I don’t have to answer questions from reporters. Don the only reason I am doing this interview is because you are on the X platform and you asked for it. Otherwise, I would not do this interview."

He also added that he is being criticised constantly and could not care less.

Lemon said in his video message: "I just want you to know that I did this deal because not only do I believe in free speech but I believe that this was the best possible chance for the work that I am doing to reach the largest amount of people."

The journalist added: "I thought the first person interview, no brainer, Elon Musk the man who calls himself a free speech absolutist."

Reacting to his termination, Lemon noted that "free speech absolutism" does not apply when it comes to questions about Musk from people like him.

According to Lemon Wednesday, the contract was called off hours after his interview with the world's richest man.

Lemon said Musk texted him: "Contract terminated".
