Authorities in Chicago said Wednesday that an 11-year-old boy was killed and a pregnant woman was critically wounded after a person launched an attack on the pair in the Edgewater neighborhood in North Side.
Police said that they arrested a suspect without releasing any information.
The law enforcers said that the 33-year-old woman was stabbed and was transported to hospital by the city’s fire department officials.
Authorities arrived at the 5900 block of North Ravenswood Avenue. According to the officials, the boy succumbed to his injuries on his chest and was found deceased at around 8am.
The woman had multiple stab wounds.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the woman as Jaydone Perkins.
Police said it was a domestic-related incident.
People at the Peterson Plaza apartments were beside themselves with grief, and some of them said “they heard screaming in the morning, just before police arrived” according to ABC Chicago.
"Screaming, just screaming," one neighbor was quoted as saying in the report adding that “yelling, screaming 'help,' but I didn't hear no intervening. I pray for healing. It's sad."
Residents said that the 11-year-old boy was kind and playful, and they described his “mother as lovely”.
Another neighbor said: "11-year-old boy, very well-mannered. Spoke to me when I see him. She spoke to me. We talked... would say, 'hey, how are you doing?'"
"She was a lovable woman, and her son was very well-mannered, and he spoke to me all the time," the neighbor added.
Police also commenced an investigation into the incident and cordoned off the crime scene.
Another nearby resident said: "Him and my daughter, they play in the yard together... well-mannered child."
"I'm devastated," a neighbor said. "I live on the compound. I have a 2-year-old, 7-year-old and 11-year-old, and I just can't wrap my head around it. Like...I'm flabbergasted."
