Eleanor Coppola, a renowned documentary filmmaker and artist, passed away at the age of 87 on April 12, 2024.
According to a statement to the Associated Press by Eleanor’s family, the Emmy-winning filmmaker died in her Rutherford, California home.
Her daughter, Sofia Coppola, decided to not attend the screening of her film Priscilla, at the New York Film Festival, held previously in October, in order to spend time with her mother.
On behalf of Sofia, the producer of the film, Youree Henley read the statement written by the writer-director, "I'm so sorry to not be there with you, but I'm with my mother, to whom this film is dedicated."
Eleanor was best known for directing the Emmy-winning 1991 documentary titled, Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse.
However, according to her IMDb page, she made her narrative feature debut with 2016’s Paris Can Wait, at the age of 80.
Additionally, she also directed documentaries, 1999's The Virgin Suicides and 2006's Marie Antoinette, alongside her daughter, Sofia.
Eleanor Coppola is survived by her husband, two children, namely, son, Roman and daughter, Sofia and two grandchildren.
