Fact-check: Does picture show KP CM handing over a car to his adviser?

Image verification tools have confirmed that the picture has been digitally manipulated

An image circulating on social media has sparked controversy, purportedly showing Ali Amin Khan Gandapur, the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), gifting the keys of a brand new luxury car to Mashal Yousafzai, his adviser.

The image is self-generated.

Claim

“Children in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are forced to sell chickens to buy school books,” posted a user on Facebook on May 2, along with an image which supposedly showed the chief minister of the province handing over the keys of a brand new car to his adviser.

The post garnered over 5,300 shares and 40,000 likes, at the time of writing.

On other platforms such as YouTube, Instagram and X, formerly Twitter, social media users criticised the government in KP for allegedly wasting money on luxury vehicles for its cabinet members. Some of the claims can be viewed here, here and here.

Fact

Image verification tools have confirmed that the picture has been digitally manipulated to create the impression that Gandapur is giving a car to Yousafzai.

InVid, an online tool, identified several discrepancies in the viral image, including suggesting that pictures of Gandapur and Yousafzai were later superimposed onto a picture, as can be seen below.

An image verification tool found inconsistencies in the picture of Gandapur and Yousafzai, showing that their headshots were later added to the picture.
