KARACHI: One of the suspects arrested in the murder of gold medallist mechanical engineer Itteqa Moeen, who was shot dead during a robbery in the metropolis, fled away from police custody.
Armed robbers gunned down Moeen, 27, in Gulshan-e-Iqbal's Block 7 earlier this month and fled with his motorcycle, mobile phone, and some cash.
The incident of the suspect fleeing away has revealed serious negligence of the court police as according to the sources, the law enforcement officials did not handcuff or chain the suspect named Zahir.
The police sources revealed that the suspect of the high-profile case was brought to court like an ordinary criminal, adding that he pushed a police official and made a run for it while he was being transferred to the van.
Taking advantage of the crowded court, the suspect fled easily, the sources added. They further said that situation would have been different if Zahir's hands were tied.
Following the incident, one of the police official has been arrested while the CCTV footage in the court premises is being checked and an alert has been issued on the roads outside the city especially those leading to Balochistan.
The sources said that the passenger buses travelling to Balochistan are being checked and the police are also conducting raids in Karachi.
The Crime Investigation Agency had arrested the suspect in Quetta and was later shifted to Karachi to face the law.
