Who is in for Kamala Harris as she takes on Trump?

On 19th July, I gave the world exclusive that US President Joe Biden was going to drop out before Wednesday. It was a time when President Biden was pressured to bow out of the race. Yet, he was adamant to stay. In three days, my story became a reality. And as expected, he endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as nominee for presidential election. 

America is not a kingdom or follows hereditary politics where any leader of the political party or president can dictate party members or their elected officials. Hence, Democrat Party has yet to officially nominate VP Harris as its presidential candidate.

However, early today it emerged that road to Harris’s candidacy is not going to be very rough anymore. From today, she has the highest possibility to face Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in November.

Last night, in another world exclusive, I had broken news on Geo TV that an e-form was circulated to all the Democrat delegates to get their full-throated support for the presidential candidate.

The aim was to secure the endorsement of at least 10% (200) of the total delegates, from each state, needed to nominate presidential candidate in the Democrat National Convention.

By doing so, the party wanted to have the will of the delegates from every corner of the country.

This was the only way to stop chaos emerged after Biden lingered on his decision to quit the race. As expected, more than 200 Democrat delegates nodded in favour of Harris. 

Surprisingly, some of those who were considered potential rivals also endorsed her bid to become president.

In Pakistan, normally the party leader is presumed as the prime ministerial candidate and if the party wins elections, they take the oath of the office. 

However, in the United States of America, the spirit of democracy prevails. Any leader can contest for the prime job but the person must secure almost 2000 votes of the delegates (top party members).

The delegates are divided into two categories:

1. Pledged Delegates, who are senior party leaders to represent their state. They enjoy more power and play crucial role in the first round of voting for presidential candidate. Mayor of Artesia, California Ali Sajjad Taj is also among them.

Then comes Unpledged or Superdelegates. They are elected officials including members of the Democratic National Committee, members of Congress, governors, former presidents or senior party officials etc.

Early today, Democrat Party has taken a sigh of relief as it has secured enough virtual nominations for VP Harris.

In a statement issued a few hours ago, the party said that Democrat leaders are overwhelmingly united around VP Harris to take on former US president Trump.

According to another statement,  Harris says that she "Will do everything in (her) power to unite the Democratic Party and unite our nation-to defeat Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda".

In taking on Trump, Harris has now got the backing of significant number of her party officials and elected representatives.
