KARACHI: Street crimes in the metropolis remained high in the first seven months of this year with more than 44,000 criminal incidents reported in the port city, The News reported Monday. 

A report by the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) revealed frightening numbers with over 31,000 incidents of motorcycle theft and snatchings reported in the city. 

It also revealed more than 1,000 cases of car theft and snatching were reported in the last seven months.

Meanwhile, more than 11,000 mobiles phones were snatched from the people, said the report, adding that there were 12 cases of kidnapping for ransom were reported and 57 incidents of extortion. 

Meanwhile, a performance report for the past week was released by Karachi's Additional Inspector General (AIG) Javed Akhtar Odho. 

The report revealed that a total of 31 encounters took place between the police and criminals last week. During these encounters, three robbers were killed and 34 others injured, leading to the on-the-spot arrest of 50 suspects.

In total, the police arrested more than 732 suspects over the past week. The report also mentioned that significant amounts of drugs were seized from those involved in drug trafficking, including 107.83 kilogrammes of hashish, 1.16 grammes of ice (crystal meth). 

Additionally, 108 different types of illegal weapons were recovered from the arrested suspects. Over the week, a total of 29 motorcycles were also taken into custody.
