California braces for celestial magic as Perseids meteor shower approaches

This year has already blessed Earthlings with massive northern lights and a Total Solar Eclipse but it seems that Northern California residents could be in for another astrological treat on Monday morning.

According to Fox40, the Perseids meteor shower is expected to be visible on Northern California on Monday between midnight and 5am.

But how can residents in the region view this magical show in the skies?

Well, the National Weather Service of Sacramento suggests that, as clear skies are an important component of a maximised viewing experience, star gazers may expect the meteor shower between 9pm on Sunday and 3am on Monday.

During this time, they may see between 50 and 100 meteors per hour.

According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa), this year’s Perseids will be slightly impacted by a 53% waxing Moon, but “the Moon will set right as the Perseids begin to peak,” the agency added.

“This means that if you are in an area free from light pollution and enjoy clear skies, you may be able to see quite a few meteors over the course of the night,” Nasa said.

Additionally, here are some tips by Nasa for those who would like to catch a glimpse of the famous meteor shower:

• Try to get to the darkest location you can, preferably out of the city. The darker it is where you are, the more meteors you will see streaking across the sky.
• Check the weather forecast for that night for predictions on fog, clouds, and temperature. Look out for areas with clear skies.
• Go to a gathering of like-minded folks in a local park, or an event hosted by a local astronomy club – especially if it’s your first time! 
• Stay warm and comfortable outside, be prepared as you will be out for a good long while and will want to lie flat on your back.
